NSG Unveils New Tech: Anti-Drone Gun & IED Detector

5 min read

NSG’s Innovative Tools Combat Modern Threats

The National Security Guard (NSG) has recently showcased some cutting-edge technology designed to combat evolving terrorist threats. These include the ‘Vajra Shotgun’ – an anti-drone weapon – and an ‘Improvised Analog Stethoscope’ for detecting IEDs.

Vajra Shotgun: Taking Down Drones

Developed by Big Bang Boom Solutions, the Vajra Shotgun is a handheld anti-drone weapon. It works by jamming the RF and GNSS signals used by drones, effectively neutralizing them. It has a range of up to 2 kilometers and has been successfully deployed over 1,150 times since 2022, disabling 27 drones.

Improvised Analog Stethoscope: Detecting IEDs

This innovative device, invented by VT Satish Kumar of the Eastern Command’s Counter Explosive Unit, is used to identify IEDs, particularly in regions like Manipur. Over the last six months, it’s successfully detected and neutralized approximately 100 kg of explosives in 75-80 timer-based IEDs. It works by listening to the timer mechanism within the device.

Demonstration & Future Plans

Both technologies were displayed at the NSG’s Counter-Terrorism International Seminar in New Delhi’s Manekshaw Centre, which focused on collaboration and innovation to address modern terrorism. The IED detector is currently in a trial phase with interest from numerous state police departments.
