South Africa Wins WTC 2023-25!
South Africa has conquered the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 title! In a thrilling final held at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, South Africa defeated Australia by 5 wickets. The Proteas successfully chased down a target of 282 runs, achieving it before lunch on June 14th.
It’s been 27 years since South Africa last claimed an ICC trophy – their first was the Wills International Cup in 1998. Australia had a first innings score of 212 and 207 runs. South Africa’s first innings was limited to 138 runs, giving Australia a 74-run lead.
Markram and Bavuma Dominate: Aiden Markram and captain Temba Bavuma single-handedly turned the match. Their partnership of 147 runs for the third wicket proved crucial. Markram smashed a century in 101 balls with 11 fours, becoming the first South African to score a century in a WTC final. Bavuma, despite hamstring issues, played a brilliant innings of 66 runs (134 balls, 5 fours). He was eventually dismissed by Pat Cummins.
Markram’s Heroic Effort: Aiden Markram scored 136 runs (207 balls, 14 fours) before being caught by Josh Hazelwood when South Africa needed just 6 runs to win. Markram and David Bedingham then added 35 runs for the fifth wicket, sealing the victory for South Africa.
