Birsa Munda Airport Expansion: 127 Homes and a Temple to be Relocated

The much-anticipated expansion of Ranchi's Birsa Munda Airport is moving ahead, but not without its share of controversy and local impact. As per the latest updates, the expansion project will require the relocation of 127 residential homes and a Shiva temple.
Airport Director R.R. Maurya confirmed that the Airport Authority of India is in continuous talks with the Jharkhand Government to acquire the necessary land. A total of 301 acres is required to facilitate the airport’s expansion. The director expressed optimism that the required land will be handed over soon.
In a related development, due to the delay in land acquisition, the CAT-II lighting system, which was intended for Birsa Munda Airport, has now been sent to Deoghar Airport. These advanced landing systems help planes land safely during dense fog and low visibility. Director Maurya noted that the equipment had been procured some time ago, and keeping it idle risked damage. Hence, on the directive of the Airport Authority, the system has been temporarily deployed at Deoghar until the land issues in Ranchi are resolved.
Once the land is available, Ranchi airport is expected to install the CAT-II system, significantly enhancing safety and connectivity, especially during adverse weather conditions.
While this development promises improved infrastructure and increased flight capacity for Ranchi, it also raises concerns about resettlement, cultural sentiment (due to the temple), and the rehabilitation of affected families. The administration will need to carefully balance infrastructure development with the rights and needs of the local community.
