NHRC Investigates Alleged Illegal Coal Mine Collapse in Dhanbad
Dhanbad Coal Mine Tragedy Sparks NHRC Inquiry
A serious investigation has been launched by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) following allegations of an illegal coal mine collapse in Dhanbad, Jharkhand. Nine labourers are believed to have died on July 22nd in the Jamunia area of Baghmara, within the jurisdiction of BCCL’s Block-2 colliery. The NHRC is demanding answers and accountability.
The NHRC, led by Member Priyank Kanoongo, has issued notices to key officials, including the Dhanbad Deputy Commissioner, SSP, BCCL CMD, and Chief Labour Commissioner. The commission is using Section 12 of the Protection of Human Rights Act to push for a swift investigation and action. Initial attempts to find survivors and a full report were reportedly delayed, fueling public concern.
Despite public pressure and intervention from MP C.P. Choudhary, a rescue operation only commenced two days later, ultimately failing to locate any survivors after a week-long search. BCCL officials and the Dhanbad SSP initially denied the incident occurred. The NHRC is now focused on establishing the truth and ensuring justice for the victims and their families.
